Help

Connecting the Relay macOS beta to your Plex account, server, and music library. If something fails, match the message you see in the app to the guidance below.

Connect Plex on first launch

Onboarding walks you through Plex in this order:

  1. Sign in with Plex to link your account.
  2. Approve Relay in the browser when asked (you may see a short code).
  3. Choose a Server, then a Library that holds music.
  4. Continue through the remaining setup steps.

Use the same Plex account that owns your server or that was invited to a shared library.

Sign in with Plex

Relay opens a browser so you can approve access on plex.tv. While that is pending, the app shows Waiting for approval and a short Code. Finish signing in in the browser window that opened.

  • If the browser never appeared, use Open browser again on the Connect Plex step.
  • If you see Plex sign-in timed out. Try again., start Sign in with Plex again and complete approval before the PIN expires.
  • Messages like PIN check failed., Unexpected Plex response., or Plex request failed (…). usually mean plex.tv could not finish the handshake. Check your internet connection, try again in a minute, or sign out of Plex in the browser and retry with the correct account.

Choose server and library

After sign-in, Relay looks up servers linked to your account (Looking for servers…). Pick the server that hosts your music, then a music library section.

  • No servers found usually means this Plex account does not see a Media Server yet, the server is offline, or you signed in with a different account than the one that owns or shares the library. Confirm the server is running in Plex, then use Refresh servers.
  • Server rows may show Owned or Shared. Shared libraries only appear after the owner has invited your Plex account.
  • If libraries are empty or still catching up, wait for Plex to finish scanning, then refresh. You may see Plex is still scanning this library. Try refresh in a minute.
  • Can’t reach this server. Make sure it’s on and on the same network. or Couldn’t load music libraries from this server. means Relay authenticated with Plex but could not talk to that Media Server. Wake the machine running Plex, stay on the same network when you expect LAN access, and try again.

If you see these messages

In the sidebar, connection problems appear under Plex connection. Downloaded tracks can still play when the server is unreachable.

  • Can’t reach your Plex server. Downloaded tracks still play. The Mac cannot reach the Media Server right now (sleeping host, VPN, Wi‑Fi change, or remote access down). Wake the server, confirm Remote Access or LAN, then refresh the library.
  • Plex server timed out. Is it awake and reachable? The server started responding slowly or not at all. Check that Plex Media Server is running and not overloaded.
  • Can’t find your Plex server. Try picking it again in Settings. The saved host name or address no longer resolves. Open Settings, confirm you are signed in to Plex, and pick the server again. Use Reprobe under Connection after network changes.
  • Plex server refused the connection. Something is blocking the port or the server rejected the client. Verify firewall rules and that the Plex app allows connections.
  • Secure connection to Plex failed. TLS or certificate negotiation failed for that URI. Prefer the connection Relay selects after Reprobe, or fix HTTPS / certificate settings on the server.
  • Plex server error (…). plex.tv or the Media Server returned an HTTP error. Retry shortly; if it persists, check Plex status and server logs.

After setup

  • In Settings, confirm Plex shows Signed in. Use Sign out / Sign in if you need to switch accounts.
  • After changing Wi‑Fi, VPN, or docking to Ethernet, use Reprobe so Relay can reselect LAN, plex.direct, or relay routes.
  • Allow Local Network access for Relay in macOS System Settings when prompted. Relay uses it to discover nearby Plex Media Servers.
  • Offline downloads keep working when the live server is down. Streaming and library refresh need a reachable server again.
